Here is a link to a very interesting site that illustrates perfectly how all ( 21 of them ) the different types of internal engines operate.
Check it out, bet it'll surprise you.
Also, there's a throttle slide at the bottom of the illustration so you can control the engine speed.
Plus a very detail description of how the thing works below that.
