Want to install power steering on my newly aquired `57 Chevy car. What I have read, it appears to be an easy project & while I am replacing the stock 283 engine would be a good time to make the change. H & H has a kit which looks complete but any suggestions would be appreciated.

You will also need to modify your steering column for a rag joint or use an aftermarket steering column such as "Ididit" or "Flameing River" .

I put a 605 on my car. That conversion is one of the best things to do to your car for ease of driving. I had to take the fender off to make the swap.

Below are a couple of links. One is instructions on how to install the 605 and the other is my diary of when I made the conversion.

Larry put another box on his after his 605 conversion but I don't remember what it was. The main complant of the 605 is lack of wheel return after a turn. Larry's new box fixes that I think.

The main shaft is one part with the orginal steering box. You have to take the whole box out and pull the shaft out through the front. The steering casing unbolts from under the dash and there is a bracket on the fire wall engine side you will have to remove. Of course you have to pull the steering wheel off first and unplug the wiring to the horn and turn signal.

I have the CPP box in my car. I previously had the 605 box and I wouldn't consider using the 605 now after using the CPP box. It may cost a little more, but it is worth it. As far as the steering wheel not centering, that is mostly an alignment issue. Cars with any of the after market steering systems on tham, ie, rack and pinion, 605 or the CPP need more caster in the alignment, 5 degrees if you can get it. In order to get the additional caster, you will probably have to either get the upper A arm shafts that have more caster designed into them or tubular upper A arms that also have the more caster designed into them. I have the tubular upper A arms in my car and have no problems with the steering, especially now that I have the CPP box.
