I may be finished with my wire harness. Nothing left but testing and putting everything back together. Wish me luck! _________________ Texas Classic Chevy Experience

I agree, lectrik stuff runs on smoke. If you let the smoke out, it's gonna quit werkin'.
Everything will probably work fine, but if not, give me a shout. We can figure it out. |

All done except when I turn off the ignition switch the engine keeps running. Something is not hooked up right. Also, still fooling with the new steering column getting it right. Fun city. _________________ Texas Classic Chevy Experience

Alan, is your "gen" light working correctly? On when key is turned on, off after engine starts? "Run-on" is usually caused by feedback from the alternator to the ignition circuit through the "gen" light. You may need a diode in the circuit to stop the frreback. To see if that's causeing it, temporarly unplug the small alternator plug and see if it keeps running. |

With the new wire harness I have not hooked up the gen light. I'm going to rerun my wires to double check if or where I messed up. If I can't find the problem I'm going to try another ignition switch I have. One way or another I will figure it out. _________________ Texas Classic Chevy Experience

I seem to remember your 57 had an alternator. acardon is correct if your alternator is the 3 wire varient. Your harness should have been provided for either the 3 wire or single wire alternator. The needed small diode is available at Radio Shack. The correct solution in detail is available at the MSD website for the problem of "engine run-on" with the ignition switch off. The one wire alternator will not work the '57's dash light as originally configured. Thus the 3 wire alternator is the best choice for the TriFive using the dash lights. _________________ "A Classic Car is Not Aerodynamic" |

I have the harness and steering column done and everything is running good. I need to get a new ignition switch as the one I have now will turn the motor off in the off position but if I turn the key all the way to lock the motor still runs.
For my next project... as I was cleaning up I noticed oil under my car. It seems that the pinion seal is leaking from the differential.

I went for a test drive today. My car is running good except for the tachometer, gas gage and speedometer are not working. I'm running short on time to be able to go on the Granbury trip. _________________ Texas Classic Chevy Experience

You don't need no stinking tach, speedo or gas gauge to go to the drive in! _________________ In My Garage -

Alan,
I agree w/David-
We caravan so we'll keep your speed{no gauge required)
This will also keep the RPM's resonable(no gauge required)
Throw a 2 gallon gas can in trunk or 'we' can make a run for u
...(no gauge required)
PROBLEM SOLVED!
SEE YA SATURDAY! |

I plan on attending but I'll drive my truck. When the mechanic is me, I don't want to drive an untested car back at night.

One out of three is bad. Worked on the speedometer, tachometer and gas gage. I had a open connection on the gas gage which was an easy fix.
I found that I had forgot to hook up the speedometer cable which I thought was the problem however with it installed the speedometer still does not work.
The tachometer is is mystery. It is wired correctly and has power in the wires but does not work?
Any suggestions? _________________ Texas Classic Chevy Experience

Is it a digital or analog tach? Do you have it connected to an ignition box or to the - coil terminal. Did it work before the rewire? |

If it is wired correctly, I'm not 100 percent sure since I have lost the wiring diagram. From the Internet I have made my best guess. The Tach is analog and did work before I started however, when I would turned on the lights it would turn off. So, I'm guessing it is toast now. I never liked it anyway, being too big for my tastes. _________________ Texas Classic Chevy Experience
