I really like old gas stations photos. My father was a Texaco man. When we took trips in the 60's, Texaco stations is where we stopped to gas up the '57. I bought many Cokes and candy bars while our salmon and cream 4 door hard top'57 had the oil checked, windows washed and gassed up with regular.

I always looked forward to see what the station owner would attach to the rest room key so you wouldn't loose it. If remember correctly, most Texaco stations had a big plastic T for a key fob.

Dallas. Texas service station at Rankin and Snider Plaza.

THEN

AND NOW

Here I am in the early 60's with my mother and our '57. We drove to Missouri to visit my Grand Parents.

After thinking about the key fobs I looked them up on Google to add to this post. This picture brings back memories.

This photo of Ringo Srar of the Beatles was taken on September 18, 1964 during the Beatles' concert at Memorial Auditorium. The photographer Beverly Kirk was on the front row, roughly where this photo was taken.

Dallas Memorial Auditorium, built in 1957 was home to the Dallas Chaparrals, which later became the San Antonio Spurs. The Beatles sang here in September of 1964.

liking the music spin ...

I have enjoyed a lot of live music in this area - both back in the day and today!

A unique place to see live acts was the Dallas Sportatorium - located near Downtown and was primarily the home of Pro Wrestling in Dallas (a whole story in itself!) and the Big D Jamboree (again an whole story in itself!), it opened in 1934, torn down in 2003 after a fire pretty much did it in in 2001.

Here is one of my favorite pics I took of Willie Nelson and his band at the Sportatorium on Dec 7, 1975

My friend Danny went to watch many wrestling matches at the Sportatorium.

Kind of a link to music.

Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas, Texas is the only public high school in the country to have graduated two Heisman Trophy winners. Davey O'Brien and Tim Brown. Steve Miller of the Steve Miller Band went there, too. So did ZZ Top bassist Dusty Hill. The School contains a piece of cake from the wedding of President Wilson's daughter, Jessie. The cake is built into the building's cornerstone.

Mandalay Canal, Las Colinas, Irving

Las Colinas was developed in 1972 by cattle ranching millionaire Ben H. Carpenter. It was one of the first planned communities in the United States and was once the largest mixed-use development in the South, with a land area of more than 12,000 acres (49 km2). Urban planners were consulted to lay out the entire town, an undertaking that predated later projects in Plano, Allen and other suburbs.

Notable attractions in Las Colinas include the Mustangs at Las Colinas sculpture and fountain and Las Colinas Flower Clock. The complex also features a River Walk-styled canal offering gondola cruises.

Back in the 80's Las Colinas was a place I always took out of town visitors. We used to go out to eat there, rode the boats in the canal and once took my mother in law to watch the 4th of July fireworks. I also had a friend who had season Cowboy tickets. We would go eat brunch in Las Colinas before going to the game at Texas Stadium.

The original John Neely Bryan's Cabin.

John Neely Bryan's Cabin. A tiny, one-room replica of the city’s first house erected in the 1930s after a flood destroyed the original. The cabin has been at several locations in Dallas and now is location in Founder’s Plaza Down Town Dallas. John Neely Bryan was originally almost everything to Dallas. He was the postmaster, a storeowner, a ferry operator where Commerce Street crosses the Trinity River today.

Photo circa 1966 - With circa 1950 shelter - for function more than aesthetics. The John Neely Bryan Cabin was a tiny, one-room replica of the city’s first house of Dallas. It was erected in the 1930s after a flood destroyed the original. The building at left background was the circa 1895 County Clerk / District Court Clerk Office facing Record Street. It was demolished in the late 1960s for construction of the underground parking lot entrance.

The original Pegasus sign was installed in 1934 on the roof of the Magnolia Oil Building – Now the Magnolia Hotel. Locals called the Pegasus the “Flying Horse.” The horse was the logo of the Magnolia Oil Co. The sign was mounted on a platform that resembled an oil derrick/well. The Pegasus was mounted 450 feet above the street and its red glow, some say, could be seen 60 miles from town. The original horse was really 2 horses 14 feet apart and were 40 by 32 in size that revolved on top of its base. Proving that Dallas was not a one house town.

Magnolia oil merged with Mobil Oil in 1959 and the Pegasus became Mobil's symbol. By the 90's the horses were in sad shape with rust and non functioning red neon lights. The horses could not be restored. A new sign was built and then unveiled in place of the old sign on national TV for New Years Eve Celebration 2000. Again the Pegasus was aglow and revolving above Dallas.

The Pegasus symbolizes Dallas as the Empire State Building does for New York. Locals feel that the Pegasus is a source of civic pride and the positive outlook on the successful growth of Dallas.

The Magnolia Building was built in 1922 at Akard and Commerce. It was the city's first skyscraper, tallest building in Texas and West of the Mississippi as well as taller than anything in Europe during the 20's.

P.C. Cobb Stadium was near downtown Dallas, Texas. The 22,000 seat stadium was built under the Works Progress It was used for high school sporting events of the Dallas Independent School District. In 1969 it was the home of the Dallas Tornado, a professional soccer team in the now- North American Soccer League. The 25-acre site and stadium was sold and demolished to make way for the Dallas Infomart, built in 1985.

Originally called Dali-Hi, it was rededicated P.C. Cobb in 1957 after the Dallas Independent School District administrator

The Bronco Bowl was designed for bowling tournaments when opened in 1961, but earned its fame as a live-music venue, with artists Bob Dylan, Marilyn Manson, Lou Reed and David Bowie. BB was known for its seats, sound and setting. in 2003, the place where rock ’n’ roll and bowling lived in harmony came tumbling down to make way for new development
