Watch this video and see what the engineers at Koenigsegg say is in the very near future for cylinder valve control; no camshaft, lifters, rockers, pushrods, etc.
Valve timing, lift are infinitely variable. Cylinder deactivation, even the ability to change between 4 cycle and 2 cycle mode at the touch of a button.
Imagine driving in economy mode then changing the timing, lift and duration for a drag race then switching back to economy without shutting off the motor.
