Snow Dogs Take a Ride
Laying by the fire, Ginger stretched, rolled over and sighed. Her tail flopped onto Cinnamon, who twitched her back legs and tapped Cayenne, who moved her head until it touched Paprika. All this comfort and warmth was making the girls sleepy, TOO sleepy. They needed to get up and do something, anything, or they would be here all afternoon.
Suddenly a sound came from the mudroom.
“Was that the Car Bell?”, thought Ginger. Ginger, indeed all the girls, loved the sound of the Car Bell. When the Man made the Car Bell sound, that usually meant it was time for a ride in the Car.
“But it’s the middle of the Cold Time!” she thought. They’ve never had a ride during the Cold Time, when Fluffy Ice blanketed everything Outside. (The Fluffy Ice never came Inside. Maybe the Man shooed it away, or maybe it didn’t like the fire. Ginger didn’t know.)
The Car Bell sounded again, louder. All four dogs raised their heads as one, then three of them turned and stared at Ginger, who was looking towards the mudroom.
Ginger bounced up, bumping into Cinnamon, who raised herself while knocking into Cayenne, who got up and careened into Paprika, who by this time was already standing. They all tore through the cabin, Ginger in the lead, towards the sound.
They reached the mudroom just in time to see the door to Outside swinging shut but not yet closed. Without pause all four girls rocketed out onto the porch, banging the door wide open, hardly touching the steps as they raced into the back yard.
The Man, dressed in a fat parka, was standing near the Car, jingling the Car Bell continuously. The girls wove around him, jumping up, chuffing and yipping, tails wagging.
The Man, a wide grin on his bearded face (which the girls, when very young, thought was his Fighting Face, but came to learn it was his Happy Face), turned and pointed to the Car. The girls, antsy and circling, waited for the Command.
The Man looked at each girl in turn, then shouted “In the Car!”. All four bounded through the Fluffy Ice at full speed and, upon reaching the Car, jumped into the open windows, Paprika and Cinnamon in front, Ginger in back (her favorite spot, which the other three always left for her). Cayenne was so full of energy she jumped onto the top of the Car.
All of them turned and faced the Man, fully expecting him to be right behind them. But instead of getting in the Car with them, the Man stood back, put the Talk Box in front of his face. There was a quick flash of light, then he looked at the Talk Box and muttered “this will make a great Christmas card” and put it in his pocket.
All eyes were on the Man as he walked around the Car, brushing off the Fluffy Ice, opening the door for Cayenne to get in back with Ginger, before getting in, inserting the Car Bell and turning it. The Car came to life after growling a bit. “The Car must have been sleepy too”, thought Ginger, “and didn’t want to wake up”.
They drove down the driveway, all four girls anticipating the sweet thrill of cold air on their muzzles as they dangled out of the open sides of the Car as it rolled faster and faster and faster.
The girls all loved the Car! |
