Well the 56 just kept running worse and worse until finally she could no longer idle without my foot in the gas pedal. Found the carburetor full of a gray material. Draining some gas from the gas tank reveled the source. Dropped the tank and found the brass filter was totally gone and the brass float had holes in it. The inside of the tanks didn't look good either. Now I admit the gas was easily a few years old but I don't remember if I had added a fuel conditioner. Any ideas of what is going on besides needing to driver her more?

For me conditioner in fuel isn't a good solution to combat old fuel. For vehicles I don't drive alot, I keep non ethanol fuel in them at all times. As you likely know, the ethanol (corn alcohol) attracts moisture from the air, as all alky fuels do. Just sitting will create issues with pump gas. Regular driving with ethanol laced fuels I don't think are that quick to create issues, but a lot of sitting likely does. Sounds like your old fuel along with old parts = your issues. Time to clean out that fuel tank and replace the sender and filter in it, then move up to the carb and clean it good! Right now the Bucee's in Denton and Ennis are easy to get in and out with plenty of pumps, the Forney option is a Wal Mart and it's always crowded and it's very tight to maneuver the pumps and I don't suggest it.
