Dream Cruise Gets Nightmare Spin-Off
The latest spinoff from the Woodward Dream Cruise, Saturday, August 19, in Detroit’s north suburban Oakland County, is more of a spoof than a spin. Ypsilanti, home of the Orphan Car Show of early June, will hold its “second annual” Nightmare Cruise the same day in the Washtenaw County college town some 30 miles west of Detroit.
According to the Detroit Free Press, as part of the Ypsilanti Heritage Festival, Nightmare is for cars too horrible in condition or appearance to even think about traveling across three counties to the Dream Cruise. Sponsors of the Nightmare Cruise say entry is reserved for ”rusted and beat-up wrecks.” Owner of the bad-dream car judged Worst of Show will receive a $500 prize.
Cruise flyers proclaim: If “the prize money greatly exceeds the value of your ride, this is the event for you!” the Freep reported. Supposedly, sponsors of the show also have lined up a mechanical crusher for final disposition of vehicles no longer deemed roadworthy – even if driven to the event and past the reviewing stand.
In other Dream Cruise news, Jim Wangers -- the one-time Pontiac promoter known as “godfather of the GTO” – also has made his annual pilgrimage back to Motor City from retirement in California for the Woodward event.
