I have a powerglide up against the original 265 engine. I want to change to either a turbo 350 or a 700R4 transmission. I will have to continue to use the front motor mounts. Can I use just the side mount conversion for the bell housing or do I have to also use a rear crossmember?
Thanks
Jim

You can use the side transmission conversion mounts with the front engine mounts. It is probably more desireable to use the side transmission mounts. With the transmission crossmember and front engine mounts, there will be more torque twist because the crossmember mount and front engine mounts are close to the centerline of the engine and transmission. I would go ahead and get the 700R4 overdrive. It will make a big difference in your cruiseing RPM.

If I understand correctly there is not a problem with useing only the front motor mounts and the side transmission mounts with the 700R trans.

The side transmission mounts will work fine with a 700R4. It's considerable lighter than the old cast iron powerglide and will keep the engine from torqueing over because of the support on the sides. http://www.danchuk.com/10_01_side_mount_conv_kit.html#762

I wonder what is the length of the 700r compaired to a borg warner T-10, how about the spedo cable, how much trouble is that? and if you change from a manual to a 700r what starter do you use?
