This a very good instructional presentation. Just an issue or 2 back in "Muscle Car Review" magazine a similar article was published for a 409 powered '62 Chevrolet restoration. What the authors of both presentations did not tell the reader is the indestructable 'beefed-up' posi unit now moves the weak point in these differentials away from the spider gears in the single trac and original posi units differentials to the bearing caps. The bearing caps have screw holes for locking the back lash adjustment. These holes are stress risers where the cracks start under servere service loads. (oversized motors and/or dumping the clutch) The old tried and true fix was to make a homemade 1/4 inch thick steel strap that sets over the driver side differential carrier bearing and uses slightly longer high strength socket head cap screws. Making brand new billlet bearing caps was out of the question due to the expensive threading needed for the bearing retainer. _________________ "A Classic Car is Not Aerodynamic" |
